???? Force Balance in a Low
-
P (PGF) and C (centripetal force) are both directed inward toward the center of the low.
-
The Coriolis force (f) acts outward, trying to push air away from the center.
So to maintain circular motion:
-
The inward forces (P + C) must balance the outward Coriolis force (f).
But wait — centripetal force isn’t an independent force; it comes from the curved path of the air and is provided by part of the pressure gradient.
???? Key Idea:
-
Part of the pressure gradient (P) goes into creating the necessary curvature (C), and only the remaining part of P balances the Coriolis force (f).
-
So, effectively, P < f when you look at how much of the pressure gradient is left to balance the Coriolis force.
Now, since:
-
Coriolis force increases with wind speed
-
And we have P < f
This means the wind speed (V) must be less than what it would be if only P and f were balancing each other — that is, the geostrophic wind speed.
