THAP-1
- T: Turn and Slip Indicator
- H: Horizontal [Lateral Axis] [Pitch Axis]
- A: Axis
- P: Precession
- 1: 1 Degree of Freedom
Freedom of movement is in one plane only – Rolling Plane.
The gyroscope in a rate of turn indicator spins in one direction and points in the direction the ship or aircraft is turning.
When the ship or aircraft is traveling in a straight line, the gyroscope points straight and the pointer on the display shows zero. When the ship or aircraft turns, the gyroscope turns in the same direction and the pointer indicates the rate of turn
#2. The radius of a turn at rate 1, and TAS 360 kts is:

#3. When the pointer of a rate of turn indicator shows a steady rate of turn:
If the aircraft banks (without turning) the gyro axis
has the freedom to remain horizontal. However, if the aircraft yaws, the frame, fixed to the
airframe, applies a force in a direction where the gyro is not gimballed, and therefore has no freedom. This results in a precession which will cause the gyro to depart from the horizontal.
A spring system prevents the gyro from turning all the way to the vertical, and the amount of spring stretch is a measure of the rate of turn

#4. If the filter of the air driven rate of turn indicator becomes partially blocked:
If the suction is inadequate (at high altitude, or with a choked filter, or a leaking suction tube)
with an air driven instrument, gyro rigidity will be lowered as the gyro is “underspeeding”.
Consequently the secondary precession needed to equal the aircraft turn can be generated by
a smaller secondary torque. This reduced torque will be produced by a smaller angle of gimbal
tilt, and this means that the instrument will under-read the turn rate or in otherwords aircraft is turning fatser tahn being shown in instruments.
#5. The gyro in a rate of turn indicator has (i) ………………….. operating speed than the gyros used in other instruments because (ii)…………………..
LOW RPM:
The gyro spins at 9000 RPM. This low RPM because:
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION IS PRECESSION
The instrument measures the precessional rate of the gyro and indicates it as a turn.

#6. The TBI shown alongside indicates:
When turning to the left, if the ball moves to the left, it indicates that the aircraft is slipping in the turn.
When turning to the left, if the ball moves to the right, it indicates that the aircraft is skidding out of the turn.
When turning to the left and the ball stays in the center, it indicates a well-coordinated turn.
